Fire Science Degree Programs

Online Fire Science Schools and On-Campus Accredited Programs

Fire science degrees are available from accredited, traditional schools and online fire science schools. This article reviews the top associate and bachelor programs.
The International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) is an independent organization which grants a peer-reviewed accreditation to the best fire science degree programs in the United States.

I write my paper and present some of the best options for students seeking both associate and bachelor degree options.

Fire Science Degree – St. Petersburg College (Florida)

SPC offers a Fire Science Technology Associate of Science degree program accredited by the IFSAC. The program contains the following sub plan areas:

  • Fire Inspector I
  • Fire Inspector II
  • Fire Officer I
  • Fire Officer II
  • Fire Investigator I
  • Fire Investigator II

The program prepares students for careers as firefighters, and is also intended for current firefighters wishing to advance their careers. Courses are available both at the physical SPC campus and through an online fire science program via SPC's eCampus (providing asynchronous courses which allow students to log in and learn whenever they choose.)

The associate degree requires 60 total hours spread across general education courses and specialized fire science courses.

In addition to the associate degree, SPC also offers six professional certificate programs in the above six concentration areas offered through the associate program.

For more information about tuition and admissions requirements, contact SPC at (727) 341-4456.

Fire Science Degree – Lake Superior State University (Michigan)

LSSU was the first school in the United States to offer an accredited four-year bachelor's degree in fire science. In addition to its bachelor degree, LSSU also offers an associate degree program, both of which are IFSAC-accredited.

The bachelor program prepares students for careers in the following fields:

  • Firefighter
  • Fire Safety Officer
  • Fire Protection Systems Designer
  • Hazardous Materials Specialist
  • Fire Officer / Chief Officer
  • Emergency Planner

The associate degree program can be completed on-campus or through an online fire science program offered through Lansing Community College or Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

For information on degree requirements and tuition, interested students should contact LSSU at 405-744-8303.

Fire Science Degree – Montgomery County Community College (Pennsylvania)

MCCC offers an Associate of Science in Fire Science program accredited by IFSAC; the program prepares students for professional careers via entry-level positions in some of the following career tracks:

  • Firefighter
  • Sprinkler & Alarm System Installer
  • Safety Engineering Technician
  • Fire Safety and Building Inspector
  • Insurance Property Appraiser
  • Building Codes Inspector

The program is composed of 61 total semester credit hours spread over general education courses and specialized major courses. While MCCC offers a number of distance learning programs, there are currently no online fire science options.

For more information on admissions and tuition, contact MCCC at 215-641-6300.

Fire Science Degree – Additional IFSAC-accredited Schools

The following schools, some of which offer online fire science programs, are also accredited by IFSAC, and offer solid degree programs:

  • Yavapai College (Arizona)
  • Aims Community College (Colorado)
  • Southern Illinois University (Illinois)
  • Johnson County Community College (Kansas)
  • Kentucky Community and Technical College System (Kentucky)
  • Lansing Community College (Michigan)

For more information on IFSAC, including a comprehensive listing of accredited schools, reference their accreditation list.

Online Fire Science Schools

A number of additional online university options are available for those looking to pursue a degree in fire science and who need additional flexibility. Below are some additional schools (which are not IFSAC-accredited):

  • Kaplan University
  • Keiser University

Both of these schools offer associate programs which offer classes on an asynchronous schedule, allowing students to learn online when it is most convenient for them. While these programs are not accredited by IFSAC, they provide additional options for those students who need additional avenues through which to study.

Benefits of Fire Science Degrees

Quality, accredited degree programs provide students with the professional and technical training needed to enter the workplace immediately upon graduation.
